General Distrust in the Political Process, IEC Says

AMMAN —Al Ghad— The Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, Mousa Maaitah, uncovered a draft to outline amendments to the contribution system for parties to enable access to financial aid, according to the political parties enactment, beforehand the elections in September, including increasing incentives for participation.

On the other hand, Chairman of the Independent Elections Commission (IEC), Khaled Kalaldeh, has repetitively stated that in light of the recurrence of failing parliaments over the years, the electorate have greatly lost trust in the integrity of the electoral and political process. Due to this, in an attempt to restore faith in Jordanian elections, Kalaldeh explains his utmost priority is to “just” secure a clean and transparent elections, for now. However, Kalaldeh stresses he intends to do his best, on the long run, to allow for the formation of a popularly elected, proportional House of Representatives.

In terms of addressing violations by candidates, Kalaldeh stated he has been intervening directly in these situations.

Moreover, a decision has been reached, Kalaldeh explains, in favour of installing cameras in polling rooms to track votes and counts, as well as in regards to approaches aimed to entice voters and encourage participation in the upcoming elections.
