AUSTIN/TEXAS, USA — A shooting in a busy area of downtown Austin, Texas, early on Sunday left one woman in her 20s dead and four people injured, police said, after an unidentified gunman opened fire into a crowd of people.

Two men and another woman were taken to a nearby medical centre. Officials said their condition was serious but not life-threatening, while another man who was injured refused to receive treatment.

Video posted to social media shows people, who were streaming out of the entertainment district’s nightclubs, fleeing in terror as the gunshots rang out.

Austin Police Department Chief of Staff Brian Manley said in a press conference that one gunman was involved. The suspect, who is still at large, is described as being a light-skinned black or Hispanic male in his 20s.

His motive is unclear but it’s believed he opened fire following a “disturbance” with another man.

Briefly afterwards the shooting, 8 minutes after receiving calls regarding the downtown shooting, emergency dispatchers were notified of another incident at a nearby street parking lot.

Nonetheless, officials seem to be confident the two incidents were in fact “isolated.”

In the other shooting, official statements explain a man in his 20s pulled out a gun and opened fire.

No one was injured, however, and witnesses disarmed the man before he was detained by police and transported to a hospital for treatment. His injuries were not life-threatening.
