OCCUPIED JERUSALEM–– An Israeli court on Tuesday extended the detention of a young Palestinian from Hebron after charging him with attempting to bomb the Jerusalem light train last month.

The court charged 21-year-old Ali Abu Hassan, a Hebron University student, of attempted murder, making a weapon and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Israeli police and the Shin Bet secret service today charged that Abu Hassan had entered an eastern Jerusalem neighbourhood and intended to carry out an attack as a form of revenge for visits by Jews and non-Muslims to the Haram al Sharif Mosque compound in the occupied city.

They also said he had made explosive devices and trained on detonating them in "open areas" in Hebron.

Extremist Jews, escorted by Israeli police, make frequent provocative visits to the holy compound, Islam's third holiest site, that have been met with Palestinian protests.

Israeli occupation authorities arrested Abu Hassan two weeks ago and had since imposed a gag order on media reporting on the case until they lifted the ban today.
