Regardless what party is involved in the scouts’ camp, we stand before a complete, utter crime. Children and younglings undergoing military training, simulating terrorist methods; leaping into flames ablaze, wallowing in water and dirt, and nude full body crawling.

The pictures circulated in the news are terrifying. And whatever information at hand indicates these training are conducted in a private school on the road between Amman and Jerash, part of a Boy Scout programme run by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood denied these allegations, and denied having anything to do with the scouts’ camp, saying this is an attempt to influence people’s options in the upcoming elections in September.

Putting aside the political aspects of the incident, let us focus on the legal sides of it; the pictures expose the faces of trainers and children, and they locate the camp. The official parties that leaked these pictures must have sufficient information on the camp.

Accordingly, investigating parties should call in everybody involved in the camp as well as the school itself, that hosted these terrifying trainings, to be investigated and referred to court for child endangerment, enticing violence, and encouraging acts that that threaten their own lives as well as the lives of those surrounding them. These pictures, regardless of anything, prove fundamental breaches of child rights.

And if these pictures do indeed expose the technical parts of military training, then further investigation would uncover the theoretical indoctrination, or theorisation; at best, coupled with the training, which may include concepts and ideas far more dangerous than leaping flared barrels and crawling.

As spectators, the political exploitation of the incident is irrelevant to us; that is a different thing altogether. The important thing is to uncover the totality of phenom, contain it, as to the major threats it entails; confirm the real spread of it, and frequency, in other parts of the Kingdom, to address it, and hold those responsible for such violations responsible; whether or not they are members of the Muslim Brotherhood or not.

Religious groups and their scout camps are nothing new. For decades past, these camps have been exploited to train “Ashbal” (Arabic for “Lion Cubs”) for combat and graduate fighters qualified to bear arms and engage in urban warfare. In Jordan particularly, just 3 decades ago, maybe more, these camps exported hundreds of fighters to Afghanistan.

Now, with time, and with Jordan’s withdrawal from supporting the Jihadist factions in Afghanistan, this phenomenon disappeared. Only until 3 years ago, almost, when the Islamic movement organised a paramilitary militia show in Downtown Amman, it surfaced, and it caused panic that spread across a vast segment of people, which caused intense disparity among the Brotherhood itself.

Otherwise, no such training, particularly of children, were not seen, save for ISIS in Syria. And we saw how they later on exploit them to exact horrific terrorist operations, more so, how they had them slit people’s throats with their youthful, delicate small hands!

Let us not drift with our thoughts and analysis, but what shows in these pictures really is worrying, and requires immediate intervention and explanation by the official authorities. So before we go ahead and weave out speculations on the issue, we need to hear the whole story, and see it seriously investigated!
