18 Candidates Quit, 1 Dies Ahead of Polls –– IEC

AMMAN — The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) Saturday announced that 18 candidates, who had registered to run in the Sept 20 parliamentary elections, dropped from the race and 1 died ten days before the polls.

The IEC said the candidates had applied to withdraw in writing to electoral committees in their own constituencies, bringing to 226 the final number of lists, which comprised 1,252 candidates vying for seats in the 18th Jordanian Lower House.

The final number of candidates running within the lists is 1,252, including 920 Muslim men and 245 women, 58 Christian males and 5 females, and 22 Sarcasian or Chechen men and 2 women, according to the final lists released by the IEC.

The commission had set the end of the working day Friday as the deadline for the withdrawal of candidates.
