NEW YORK — The United Nations Security Council is due to hold an emergency meeting on Saturday night to discuss the surge of violence in Aleppo.

The meeting was requested by Britain, France and the United states, to address the crisis in the war-torn Syrian city of Aleppo.

A statement by the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he is "appalled by the chilling military escalation" in the war-ravaged Syrian city of Aleppo that witnesses say is spearheaded by Syrian forces and their Russian allies.

"Since the announcement two days ago by the Syrian army of an offensive to capture eastern Aleppo, there have been repeated reports of air strikes involving the use of incendiary weapons and advanced munitions such as bunker-buster bombs, it added.

Ban heaped criticism on the international community, calling "this a dark day for the global commitment to protect civilians" in the country.

The statement also called on world powers to "send a clear message" that "the apparent systematic use" of incendiary bombs and so-called bunker-buster bombs "will not be tolerated."
