DUBAI — The assigned counsel who represented the defendant in the murder of a 9-year-old Jordanian boy has submitted a request to the Appeals Court in Dubai that he be excused from the task.

Lawyer Omran Darweesh argued that he was unaware and uncertain of the condition of the defendant, who told the court he had mental disorders. He also said he had asked the court to refer the suspect to a medical panel to evaluate his mental condition, but his plea was turned down.

The boy, Obaida Aqrabawi, was kidnapped on May 20 while playing outside his father's auto repair shop in Sharjah’s industrial area. His body was found two days later dumped by a road in Dubai.

The defendant was sentenced to death on August 15 by the Dubai Criminal Court for kidnaping and killing the victim.
