Deputising for King, Public Works Minister Participates in UN Conference on Housing

QUITO — Deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah II, Minister of Public Works and Housing Sami Haalsa took part in the Third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) which was held in Quito, Ecuador.

In remarks during the conference, which was attended by delegations from 193 countries, the minister said that the main challenge facing the world today is the presence of 60 million displaced people due to wars, disasters, conflicts and terrorism. "Jordan has been able through the wisdom of its Hashemite leadership and the awareness of its people, to turn challenges into opportunities despite regional crises, Halasa said.

He noted that the Kingdom is hosting a round 1.3 million Syrian refugees or 20 percent of its population, adding that this is reflecting negatively on the health and educational services as well as infrastructure in the Kingdom.

The minister also took part in a session on the impact of forced migration caused by wars and natural disasters on host countries.

Halasa met on the sidelines of the conference with the Saudi Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs Abdul Latif Sheikh and discussed with him cooperation between the two ministries as well as the opening of communication channels between construction companies from both countries, in light of the presence of 25 thousand Jordanian engineers in Saudi Arabia.
