AMMAN — The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Raad Al Hussein on Friday condemned crimes in the Syrian city of Aleppo, which he said constituted "crimes of historic proportions".

Aleppo has turned into "a slaughterhouse", the top UN human rights official said, while noting that the siege and bombardment of Aleppo had caused heavy civilian casualties amounting to war crimes.

Addressing a session of the Human Rights Council, dedicated to discussing the humanitarian situation in Aleppo, Prince Zeid "the violations and abuses suffered by people across the country, including the siege and bombardment of eastern Aleppo, are simply not tragedies; they also constitute crimes of historic proportions".

More than 300,000 Syrian citizens have been killed since the start of the conflict back in 2011, Prince Zeid said, adding that Aleppo has become a slaughterhouse.
