AMMAN — Minister of Industry and Trade Yarub Qudah said Saturday that the government is seeking JOD100 million next year to bankroll Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) within the national strategy to support entrepreneurship.

He said the government will endorse the entrepreneurship and SMEs support strategy within days, and that the necessary allocations will be decided for the strategy, at the centre of which is promoting creativity and free access to finance.

The minister told a ceremony to promote products offered by the Arab Islamic International Bank, including a number of industrialists and SMEs leaders, that the SMEs sector accounts for just 13 per cent of facilities offered by banks, pointing to the difficulties that hamper the sector's contributions to development.

Qudah said Jordanian exports shrank by 9 per cent this year from 2015 and 11 per cent from 2014, adding that the downtrend had put the government before a tough challenge in its efforts to uplift the economy.
