LONDON — Greg Clark, the UK business secretary, has said the government is seeking a deal to shield Britain’s car manufacturing industry from the impact of Brexit by guaranteeing tariff-free access to Europe.

Clark said promises made to Nissan that last week led to a decision by the Japanese carmaker to invest in Sunderland were extended to other car groups with plants in the UK, adding he had already given similar assurances to "other manufacturers".

British industries including pharmaceuticals and manufacturing are also demanding similar terms from the government, with several asking for written confirmation their exports will be exempted from trading barriers after Brexit has been completed, Financial Times said.
