AMMAN —Al Ghad— The compound civilian and military public pensions bill has increased to JOD1.2 billion in 2016, up 250 per cent over the last 13 years, from 2003’s JOD345 million.

The pensions’ bill, considered a pressing issue by economic and financial experts and spectators, comprises now 15 per cent of Jordan’s total public expenditure.

Since 1995, experts; including former Minister of Finance Dr Mohammad Abu Hammour, confirmed to “Al Ghad” that several resolutions have been placed to control and minimise expenditures on pensions, but the salaries restructuring in 2012 prevented the implementation of the drafted solutions.

Among the solutions drafted, the government raised the retirement age from 20 to 25 years for civilian service and 16 to 20 years for military service.
