RAMMALLAH — A top Palestinian Liberation Organisation official said the status of Jerusalem is subject to negotiation and warned that any decision today on the occupied city would destroy the peace process.

US president-elect Donald Trump vowed on the campaign trail that he would move the US embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem if he became president. But transition officials said it is premature to say when Trump would deliver on his pledge.

Trump's senior communications advisor Jason Miller said in remarks reported Friday by Reuters that the president-elect still supported the idea, but added that any further details would be premature.

Trump, who will be inaugurated on Jan 20, had just picked David Friedman, who strongly backs Jewish settlement on occupied Palestinian land and moving the embassy to Jerusalem, as US ambassador to Israel.

Early on in the campaign trail, Trump has declared he would oppose any attempt by the United Nations to impose decisions on Israel and vowed to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem if he were elected to the presidency.

Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative Mustafa Barghouthi also warned that the appointment of Friedman as US ambassador to Israel sends a dangerous signal to the Palestinians and the world about the real intentions of the new US administration.

Barghouthi said in a statement that Friedman is a strong backer of settlements and an advocate of the embassy's move, noting that Trump's choice for ambassador had declared support for annexation of occupied territory in the West Bank to Israel. He said Friedman's organisation had made donations to the settlement of Beit El near Ramallah.
