AMMAN — A gunman suspected of killing 39 people in a New Year's attack on a nightclub in Istanbul has been caught by police, according to Turkish news media.

State-run Anadolu news agency said the alleged attacker, whom it and other media named as Abdulgadir Masharipov, was detained with another man of Kyrgyz origin and three women in Istanbul's Esenyurt district.

On January 1, the attacker shot his way into the Reina nightclub then opened fire with an automatic rifle, reloading his weapon half a dozen times and shooting the wounded as they lay on the ground.

Of the 39 dead, 27 were foreigners, including citizens from Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Iraq, Tunisia and Morocco. At least 69 people were wounded in the attack.
