WASHINGTON — The director of the Secret Service, Joseph P. Clancy, is retiring after a cumulative total of 29 years at the agency, the Secret Service announced late Tuesday.

Clancy will step down and retire next month, giving President Trump the chance to install his own choice.

He joined the Secret Service in 1984 and became the leader of Obama’s detail in 2009, before initially retiring in 2011.

Director Joseph Clancy was hired by President Barack Obama to shore up the agency after a series of high-profile scandals back in 2014. He was the former leader of Obama's protective detail and had retired into the private sector before being summoned back to the public arena.

Clancy steered the Secret Service as it strained under a heavy workload and the lowest number of employees in a decade.
