AMMAN — The Canadian government is extending a CAD7.58 million grant to Jordan to support the education sector and help it cope with burdens arising from the Syrian refugee crisis.

The grant agreement was signed by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Imad Fakhouri and Canadian Ambassador to Jordan, Peter MacDougall, in the presence of Minister of Education, Omar Razzaz and Canadian Minister of International Development and Francophonie Marie-Claude Bibeau.

Fakhouri told reporters that the grant was part of a CAD25-million assistance package provided to Jordan by the governments of the UK, the U.S. and Norway and in the framework of the output of the London donor conference, held in February, 2016.

He thanked the Canadian government for the assistance and said Canada was one of the first countries to respond to the Syrian refugee crisis.

Canadian Minister of International Development and Francophonie Marie-Claude Bibeau said that her country pledged, at the London donor conference, CAD1.1 billion, to be paid over the next three years, to countries affected by the Syrian crisis.
