AMMAN — Top US diplomat for the Middle East, Jason Greenblatt, met with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu late Monday, as part of his first trip to Israel as US special representative for international negotiations.

A statement from the Israeli leader's office said Greenblatt "reaffirmed President Trump's commitment to Israel's security and to the effort to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve a lasting peace through direct negotiations." During a conversation lasting more than five hours, Netanyahu and Greenblatt discussed Israel's settlement building "with the hope of reaching a formula that will aim to promote peace and security," the statement added.

Greenblatt took to Twitter late Monday after the meeting to say that he and Netanyahu "discussed the regional situation, how progress towards peace with Palestinians can be made".
