AMMAN — The Prime Minister, Dr Hani Mulqi on Sunday, received Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Abul Gheit, currently on a visit to the Kingdom, to discuss preparations for the Arab summit Jordan is hosting later this month.

During the meeting, which was attended by Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi and Assistant Arab League Secretary General Hussam Zaki, Mulqi said that Jordan, in cooperation with the Arab League, has completed all preparations to host the summit.

The prime minister voiced hope that the Arab summit will provide an opportunity to renew joint Arab action in light of the current situation in the Arab region. He also pointed to the role of the summit in finding solutions to issues and challenges facing the Arab nation.

Separately, Abul Gheit and Minister Safadi met to discuss technical specifics, wherein a joint press conference, Safadi said: "We reviewed arrangements that have been taken to ensure the success of the high-profile meeting". He said His Majesty King Abdullah II wants the summit to be a platform for a frank Arab dialogue on how to deal with issues and crises besetting the region and about means to enhance joint Arab action so as to guarantee our ability to serve the interests of the Arab nation and realize aspirations of our Arab peoples.

"Preparations for the meeting are being taken in a brotherly partnership and they are a joint effort between Jordan, as a host country, and the Arab League", said the minister while emphasizing that the outcome of this coordination will be demonstrated clearly on the success which will achieved when the summit takes place.

Responding to a question on the possibilities of Syria's participation in the summit meeting, he said:" Jordan is the host of the meeting and the issue of invitations comes from the Arab League's resolutions, to which we adhere". "The decision of the Arab League was not to invite Syria and therefore an invitation will not be extended to it, Safadi added.

For his part, Abul Gheit said the purpose of his visit was to submit a report to HM King Abdullah and Jordanian officials on the topics which will be tackled during the summit.

Mulqi affirmed Jordan's support to activating the role of the Arab League as well as joint Arab action, noting that Jerusalem, the Palestinian cause, as well as terrorism and extremism will top the agenda of the summit.

The Arab League chief praised preparations that have been taken by Jordan to host the summit.
