AMMAN — Minister of Water and Irrigation Hazim Nasser took part in a ministerial meeting of the European Union and Mediterranean on Water that was hosted by Malta.

The meeting aims at formulating a ministerial declaration defining a common agenda towards water security in the Mediterranean within the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) framework, with the aim of bringing multiple benefits far beyond the water sector.

In remarks during the conference, the minister said that event provides an important opportunity to achieve a common vision among Mediterranean countries to sustain water resources and boost cooperation in the water sector.

He said that this important conference, held in the presence of senior officials an experts in the water sector, reflects the importance attached to the water sector in order to address the challenges facing it, as well as the climate change that affect countries of the Mediterranean.

Jordan, despite, the decrease in water resources, and the rise in the number of consumers after the Syrian refugee crisis, has been able to deal effectively with the water issue," Nasser added.

The UfM ministerial meeting creates an opportunity for the UfM Ministers responsible for Water to act together sharing views on water policy in the Mediterranean, stress the key relevance of water in the Mediterranean region and renew the commitment of countries on the water agenda.

It also provides guidance on contributions of the water agenda in responding to key objectives in the region, and create a positive environment for the private investment and map regional funding for the water agenda through joint planning and mainstreaming.
