WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump late Tuesday fired FBI Director James Comey after several members of his administration recommended his dismissal.

A statement from Press Secretary Sean Spicer said President Trump acted based on "clear recommendations" from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

A search for a new permanent FBI director will begin immediately, the statement added. In a message to FBI employees, Sessions said Andrew McCabe, the bureau's deputy director, had assumed the position of acting director.

The White House made the stunning announcement shortly after the FBI corrected a sentence in Comey's sworn testimony on Capitol Hill last week. Mr Comey said in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee last week that Ms Abedin "forwarded hundreds and thousands of emails" that contained classified information to the laptop of husband and erstwhile Congressman Anthony Weiner.

On Tuesday, the FBI said in a two-page letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee that only "a small number" of the thousands of emails found on the laptop had been forwarded there while most had simply been backed up from electronic devices.

Most of the email chains on the laptop containing classified information were not the result of forwarding, the FBI said.
