Unemployment in Q1-2017 at 18.2%, Female Unemployment Up to 33%

AMMAN —AlGhad— The Department of General Statistics said in a statement to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that the rate of unemployment in Jordan during the first three months of the year, 2017, stood at 18.2 per cent.

Among males, unemployment has increased by 0.1 per cent, to 13.9 per cent, as opposed to an 8.2 per cent increase among females, to 33 per cent.

According to the Jordan Strategies Forum (JSF) the national rate of female unemployment is extremely high.

A JSF statement issued Wednesday, said Jordan ranks 16th out of 217 countries, in the criteria of female unemployment.

According to the Forum’s figures, male contribution to the local labour market is 6 times the female contribution, based on the official numbers. Even though women comprise 49.26 per cent of Jordan’s population.

Additionally, the JSF said the Statistics Department has adopted new methods and surveys to measure unemployment during the first quarter of the year.

The new criteria which government the Department’s new stats were recommended by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
