AMMAN —AlGhad— The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation signed an agreement today, Monday, with the Japanese government, to extend a USD12.6 million grant to finance the second phase of the Balqa water grid rehabilitation and expansion project.

Back in 2014, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded the first phase of the project with another USD20 million grant.

Jordan’s Minister of Planning, Emad Fakhouri, expressed appreciation for Japan’s consistent support over the years, especially in regards to addressing the challenges of the Syrian Refugee Crisis.

The agreement was signed by Minister Fakhouri, the Japanese Ambassador to Amman, Shuichi Sakurai, and Chief Representative of JICA Office in Amman Tsutoma Kobayashi.

Since 1999, Japan has provided nearly half a billion dollars in grants, and around USD800 million in extended credit facilitation, on top of other technical support and machinery.
