Bill Cuts Income Tax Allowance in Half, MPs to Oppose Tax Amendments

AMMAN —AlGhad— The minister of Finance, Omar Malhas, on Tuesday, submitted a bundle of amendments to the Tax Law for review by the government’s Economic Committee. The bill entails expansions to the taxable demographic base, reducing extended allowances to individuals and households by half, a source who preferred anonymity confirmed to AlGhad.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Investment, MP Khair Abu Suailik, confirmed that the Committee will oppose the suggested amendments.

In more detail, the amendments will include all individuals making JOD6,000 annually and households making JOD12,000 annually in the taxable base.

Alternatively, the Bill will reallocate allowances for individuals and households within the taxable range in the healthcare and education sector.

The new law also amplifies sanctions on tax evasion.

According to the anonymous source, these amendments are intended to help collect the additional sum of JOD450 million, as required by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
