AMMAN —AlGhad— Dozens of taxi drivers held another demonstration today, Wednesday, in front of the Ministry of Transportation, protesting the “temporary” permits issued for smartphone-based carpooling services, Uber and Careem.

Protestors demanded that only yellow taxis be allowed to operate smartphone-apps, and that all other carpooling services be outlawed, especially ones pooling private licence vehicles.

Earlier, temporary six-month permits were issued to nearly 19 smart-app carpooling services, including Uber and Careem.

Meanwhile, Jo-Taxi has begun customer service training sessions for taxi drivers to help raise the level of services provided by the yellow taxi, according to the association of taxi drivers.

Nonetheless, Association chairman, Ahmad Abu Haidar, said that these top-notch carpooling services have created an atmosphere of unfair, cut-throat competition.

Taxis cannot at this point compete with Careem, Uber, and other similar companies.
