AMMAN —AlGhad— Dozens of members of the Beef Cattle Farmers Cooperative held a protest yesterday, Thursday, demanding limitations to be placed on the importation of beef cattle powdered milk, in order to support the domestic sector.

“The Minister of Agriculture has not responded to 95 per cent of the farmers demands, even though they’re legally valid,” Marwan Sawalha said, spokesperson for the Cooperative.

According the Domestic Product Protection Article (59) of the Agriculture Law, importation should be limited to covering shortages in domestic produce, he underlined.

Domestic produce of beef cattle is in excess, he stressed, and is therefore eligible to a degree of protection measures, he stressed.

Supplies of domestic powdered milk and beef cattle produce currently surpasses demand due to the large amounts imported, Sawalha highlighted.

Meanwhile, protestors have confirmed to AlGhad that their establishments have suffered considerable losses, due to the accumulation of debt, as massive quantities of fresh milk go to waste every day.
