AMMAN — Local ICT sector revenues have risen to USD2.1 billion, posting a growth rate of 3.6 per cent, according to a survey.

According to the survey, conducted by the ICT Association of Jordan- Int@j, in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and in cooperation with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, revenues soared by 70 million dinars at the end of last year, compared to the previous year.

The sector had separately soared 7.2 per cent, compared to a 0.7 per cent increase in the previous year, the survey found.

The sector's revenues at the end of 2016 were at USD1.36 billion, compared to USD1.35 billion at the end of 2015, it said, adding that the workforce in the sector last year had also recorded an increase of 17,400, compared to 16,790 in 2015, a growth rate of 3.7 per cent.

It also revealed that investment in the telecommunications sector had picked up by the end of 2016 following a dramatic drop as foreign investment surged, with the United Arab Emirates topping the list, according to the survey.

Int@j Chairman of the Board of Directors, Bashar Hawamdeh, said that the growth indicates the "cautious optimism" witnessed by the sector, especially as it bears a large tax burden, in the light of the volatility of legislations and reports about amendments to the income and sales tax Law.
