AMMAN — His Majesty king Abdullah on Sunday held talks at the Husseiniya Palace with a delegation representing Arab and International Relations Council (AIRC) led by its Chairman, Mohammed Jassim Saqr, on the region's latest developments, especially those related to the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem.

During the meeting, the King said the Palestinian cause is a central issue and urged the int'l community to assume its responsibilities in finding a political prospect to re-launch peace efforts aimed to achieve lasting and comprehensive peace in the region in accordance with the two-state solution and to ensure the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The King voiced full support to the Palestinian brethren to preserve their historic and legal rights and said Jordan will continue safeguarding Muslim and Christian sites in Jerusalem as a part of the Hashemite custodianship on the city's holy shrines.

The King stressed the need to back Jerusalem dwellers and to protect the Arab identity of this holy city and added Jerusalem is the key to realizing regional peace and stability and to resolving Mideast conflicts.

The King reiterated the importance of Jerusalem for Muslims and Christians alike, a stance voiced by religious church leaders in Jordan and Jerusalem whom His Majesty met last month at the Baptism Site.

The King highlighted the crucial role the AIRC has assumed in presenting pan-Arab stances at global arenas, especially the Mideast challenges.

Discussions also touched on the crises in the Middle East and efforts aimed to find a political settlement to them in a manner that restores security and stability to their people.

The delegation, for their part, voiced appreciation to Jordan's key role under the King's leadership to achieve stability and security in the region and His Majesty's sustained efforts in defending the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem.

Royal Court chief, minister of foreign affairs and director of the King's office attended the meeting.
