US, Jordan Memo to Up Annual Aid to USD1.275b

AMMAN —AlGhad— Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US counterpart, Secretary Rex Tillerson, signed a new Memo of Understanding (MoU) today, Wednesday, boosting annual US aid to Jordan by USD275 million, to USD1.275 billion, as of 2018 through 2022.

In total, the US will have allocated a sum of USD6.375 billion over the duration of five years, to support Jordan’s efforts to attain welfare and maintain security for its citizens.

The Memo underlines the Americans’ appreciation of Jordan’s pivotal role in the region and its future, in addition to safeguarding and supporting US interests in the war on terrorism.

Moreover, the Memo also highlights the main field of cooperation between the two countries, from agricultural, economic all the way to military and defence.

According to a statement by the spokesperson for the US State Department, the Americans fully support Jordan’s underway political and economic reforms.

One of the purposes of increasing aid, aside to strengthening bilateral ties, the spokesperson’s statement confirmed, is to alleviate some the pressures of Jordan’s refugee crisis.
