GAZA — Public sector employees in the Gaza Strip went on a general strike on Monday to protest the Palestinian reconciliation government's failure to pay them their salaries.

Employees did not report to work in ministries and schools closed their doors across the Israeli-blockaded coastal territory as the Union of Public Employees called for a strike, the second in a month. The union said staff had only received 40 percent of their salaries for five months.

In a press statement, the union of tens of thousands of employees said the work stoppage included ministries, government institutions and entities and schools to vent their anger over unpaid wages.

Also today, the Union of Fishermen in Gaza observed a strike to protest the killing yesterday of a fisherman, who was shot dead by Israeli naval forces.
