AMMAN —AlGhad— Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi is scheduled to partake in an UNRWA support conference to be held in Rome, Italy, later this month, called for by Jordan, to boost financial and political support for the UN agency.

Informed sources indicate that the conference will also feature the foreign ministers of Sweden and Egypt, to help devise solutions to the UNRWA’s defunding.

The Conference will be held at the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s headquarters in Rome, and will be attended by representatives from 90 countries.

Ministers and officials from member-states of the Arab League and the European Union, as well as the United States, confirmed their attendance.

The Agency (UNRWA) now faces its greatest funding crisis since its establishment in 1949, as the US has already cut funding by half.

Warfare and violence in Syria, the Gaza strip and the violations of Israeli occupation have escalated the suffering and crises of Palestinian refugees. The UNRWA’s defunding could result in catastrophic outcomes, should it continue the current pace.
