AMMAN — The Jordanian-German Friendship Committee at the Senate, headed by Wajih Aweis, met on Sunday with the regional director of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), Michaela Baur.

During the meeting, Aweis said the historical ties between the two countries, based on the continued joint cooperation and mutual respect, are a model to follow suit.

Aweis lauded the German support for the Kingdom, which bears the brunt of hosting refugees triggered by the current conflicts in the region, stressing the importance of enhancing cooperation at various levels, especially in the economic and environmental domains.

In turn, Baur said her country views the Kingdom a key partner in the Middle East and a strategic centre for the implementation of the GIZ's various development programs in the region.

Baur pointed out the German agency, which has been operating in Jordan for 40 years, focuses on a number of sectors, especially water, labour, education and vocational training, environment and climate change, and waste management.

The agency is executing a range of regional programs in Jordan, most of which focus on the microfinance sector, economic integration, women's empowerment, support for Palestinian refugees and other economic, environmental and energy bids, she explained.
