AMMAN—Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Dr. Ibrahim Saif stated that the construction of the oil shale electricity generation project shall commence in June 2016.

The Estonian company “Enefit” has concluded the necessary financial closure procedures to fund the USD2.2 billion project, according to statements he made to the press last week.

Accordingly, Company sources confirm that “Attarat-Enefit” have contracted Al-Own Advanced Contracting Co. to begin drilling and construction within the next 4 months, adding that the station is expected to begin generating electricity from extracted oil shale 30 months after constructions start early in June.

Notably, sources also implied that agreements with funding parties in China have been signed during His Majesty’s visit last year; Chinese company Guangdong Power Engineering (GPEC) —a member of government-owned Energy China (CEEC) and a state-grid subsidiary investment, is a leading international company with records of having constructed and operated stations with the capacity of 61 thousand megawatts around the world successfully.

The electricity generation project —the first of its kind in Jordan, relies on the Kingdom’s natural reserves of oil shale estimated somewhat between 40 and 70 billion tonnes, and is expected to save the Country around JOD350 million annually, providing 3500 jobs over the duration of the construction phase and 1000 employment opportunities afterwards to operate the station.
