AMMAN—Jordanian Custom Clearance Association declared an open strike in Aqaba customs area starting next Sunday 28th of February 2016.

The Association disseminated the decision explaining that the strike will hold until further notice; primarily until clearance companies respond to the Association’s requests to relocate the examination area to block number 4. The request was made several times to companies and customs offices, clarifying that the current settings are not safe for custom clearance workers and employees.

On the other hand, customs clearance companies justify not complying to the Association’s numerous requests saying that block 4 is to begin with; not prepared or equipped with the necessary tools, facilities, and traffic safety instruments to house customs examination and clearance operations. Second of all, the block is Km25 away from the Aqaba governorate, located by a dangerous land courier and shipping route that often witnesses devastating accidents.

Accordingly, special Aqaba authority and customs started working 5 years ago on building an adequately fitted customs facility with the necessary safety and organisation measures.
