AMMAN — Land Transport Regulatory Commission (LTRC) director Marwan Hmoud confirmed the Governments has agreed to form a committee consisting of the Commission, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Traffic Department, to outline the prerequisites and referential specifications for the execution of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project, noting that the committee will set the operational pre-conditions as well as the underlying mechanisms of construction and operation.

Hmoud stated that the decision by Government to form the Committee came after the Cabinet revoked the previous decision to putting out the project for tender for the reasons that the plans and documents presented were inconclusive and that the project needs to be reviewed under new pre-conditions and specifications.

The ITS project is expected to enhance the quality of public transportation and the efficiency of sector monitoring, added the adaptation of an integrated and flexible payment application, enabling the Commission to implement the transportation support programme for students and special user segments.

According to published records of the LTRC, the number of public transportation buses exceeds 15 thousand units, added over 4,500 smaller buses, 16 thousand taxi cars, around 12 thousand of them are in Amman alone.
