KERAK — Workers at different departments with the Jordan Abyad Fertilisers and Chemicals Co. commenced, Tuesday, an open strike in Abyad, east of Kerak.

The strike led to complete production paralysis as labourers had constructed a tent to hold the strike in front of the factory’s entrance, with the presence of police units.

Previously, the Jordan General Trade Union of Workers in Mining and Metal Industries decided the strike, and gave the Company a week to respond to the workers’ demands.

Union vice president, Mohammad Hajjaya, stated that the union disseminated the decision a week before the strike date, hoping for a positive response by the Company’s administration, who refused all proposed resolutions.

Moreover, Hajjaya said that the company’s response, employing 385 personnel, to the strike is the determinant factor in the progress of the situation; the demands made include organisational restructuring, job descriptions, salaries, and cashing all due financial rights of employees at once, as well as committing to cash pay cheques and cash at dates not exceeding the seventh of every month, according to the labour laws and regulations.

Company CEO declared to the working body of the factory that the company has opened the doors to reengineer the labouring faculty for a limited number of labourers fitting of the factory’s operation requirements and capacities. The labourers also demanded a 3 month compensation according to Social Security regulations JOD15,000 all around, added all due additional yearly salaries.
