“Emirati” 52-Thousand Tonne Wheat Shipment Arrives

AMMAN —Al Ghad— The first of the “Emirati” Company wheat shipments has arrived, according to the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation, Yanal Barmawi, who stated to “Al Ghad” that the 52-thousand tonne shipment, worth USD11.128 million, has passed the specification and laboratory tests in Aqaba.

Accordingly, this is the first of an annual 400 thousand tonne of wheat entailed in the agreement between the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply, and the Emirati company “Al Dhaher” to import wheat at USD4 less than global prices; USD214/tonne in total, saving JOD1.6 million every year.

The quantities imported through the “Emirati” Company comprise 41 per cent of Jordan’s consumption of wheat for 5 months, totalling annually 960 thousand tonnes at JOD195 million, give and take.

In regards to reserves of wheat, official statistics indicate the Country’s reserves cover 9 to 11.5 months, 920 thousand tonnes in total, 470 thousand in store, and 450 thousand tonnes en-route.
