AMMAN — Al Ghad— General Director of the Nuclear Electricity Company, Dr Ahmad Hiasat, stated that the construction of Jordan’s first nuclear energy generation station in Azraq, near Amra Palace, will commence laying the foundation for the facility in 2018 should the government pass the bill.

JOD4 million has been allocated for the Company’s operations last year, with the current year’s estimates have been increased to JOD9 million to cover operational and consultancy expenses for the establishment of nuclear energy facilities to add to the Jordanian energy mix growing annually by 7 per cent, as the station is proposed at a total cost of JOD10 billion for the constructions of 2 plants.

The proposal by the Company centres the project on Russian nuclear technology solutions provided by Russian “Atom Story Export”, in a strategic investment partnership with operating company “Rosatom Overseas”, according to a Jordan-Russian agreement, at a 49-51 per cent Jordanian majority share accord.
