NEW YORK — Israel was voted to head the permanent ‘legislative’ committee, or the 6th Council; with the UN in a first for Israel to ever preside any one of the Permanent UN Councils since joining the United Nations in 1949.

“Alquds Alarbi” newspaper stated that at least 4 Arab countries voted for the Israeli delegate to head the mostly procedural and figurative committee, which will nevertheless give Israel grounds to put more weight into the routine affairs the UN.

On the other hand, the Islamic resistance movement Hamas had publically condemned Israel’s nomination by western European states, earlier the same day, describing the candidacy as “catastrophic”, and that it would encourage Israel to continue terrorising and oppressing the Palestinian people.
