RAMALLAH — Dozens of extremist settlers early Wednesday stormed compounds of the Al-Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif, while chanting "Jerusalem is the capital of Israel," according to a Palestinian source.
The General Director of the Islamic Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Affairs, Sheikh Azzam Khatib, told Petra's reporter in Ramallah that Israeli settlers broke into the Muslim's holy shrine from the Bab Magharbeh Gate under heavy protection of Israeli forces and police, raising banners saying " Jerusalem the capital of Israel".
Khatib stressed that Muslim worshippers and the mosque's guards peacefully confronted the intruders chanting Allahu Akbar (God is great).
United States President Donald Trump late Tuesday announced his intention to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, ignoring warnings from the Middle East and the world that such a step would threaten the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians.
According to reports from Washington, Trump will announce in a speech Wednesday his country's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, with orders to begin relocating the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
