House Passes 2018 Budget Bill after 1-Day Debate

AMMAN —AlGhad— House of Representatives, for the first time in Jordan’s history, passed the 2018 General Budget Bill today, Sunday, after just one day of discussion and debate, in what Speaker Atef Tarawneh described as “positive precedent.”

Tarawneh explained that the time distribution for blocs and independent MPs has helped cut the debate short, resulting the quickest ratification ever, of any general budget bill in Jordan’s history.

A motion to reject the Bill was earlier propose but was voted out by the MPs.

Overall, public revenues as estimated in the General Budget Bill at JOD8.496 billion include JOD700 million in grants, whereas Independent Government Units’ revenues are estimated at JOD1.812 billion, separate from the General Budget.

After bread de-subsidisation, direct cash support for Jordanians is estimated at JOD14.4 annually, per capita.

During the debates, blocs were each given 20 minutes to make their statements and Bloc members and independent MPs were each given seven.

Six MPs spoke for six blocs, representing 104 MPs in total.
