AMMAN —AlGhad— An informed official source confirmed to AlGhad that the government is going to raise commodity sales taxes on a variety of manufactured goods and products.
The tax hike will have a ceiling of 10 per cent, the source confirmed, as the hike margin will vary based on the standing tax rate of the commodities, which currently ranges from 4 to 8 per cent.
Accordingly, the government aims to unify the deducted sales tax on commodities at 10 per cent, the source explained, which will secure an additional JOD100 million in annual tax revenues.
Unconfirmed leaks from unofficial sources have confirmed that some 500 deducted tax commodities are included in the sales tax revamp the government is looking into.
The general sales tax was first enacted in 1996 at 7 per cent and was gradually increased up to 16 per cent for an extended array of commodities and services.
